This mug is the perfect way to tell the real story of Father Christmas by bringing to light the life of St. Nicholas. Coming from a rich family, Nicholas had a repuation for helping the poor as much as he could.
One of the legends of St. Nicholas involves a poor man who was unable to provide a dowry for his three daughters. Nicholas would secretly drop bags of gold down the chimney (one bag even fell into a stocking hung by the fire) until the man had enough for each dowry. Saint Nicholas' kindness was eventually discovered by the father. From then on, gifts given in secret were attributed to Nicholas.
Another legend involving his intercession on behalf of three children gave rise to his patronage of children, and gradually evolved into the giving of presents, in his name, at Christmastime. The modern name "Santa Claus" came from the Dutch translation of Saint Nicholas: Sinterklaas.
